Iowa Central Takes Region 11 Women's Wrestling Championship
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - At the first-ever Region 11 Championships for Women's Wrestling, the Iowa Central Tritons outlasted the Iowa Western Reivers to take home the trophy.
The Tritons won four weight classes at 124, 131, 138 and 145. Annabelle Petsinger at 124, Alexis Ross at 138 and Delise Villa at 145 were all No. 1 seeds.
Avery Mohr at 131, ended up pinning the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the class, Iowa Lakes Holly Garrett.
The Tritons had nine top three finishers at the end of the day.
Iowa Western ended in second, 10 points behind the Tritons. They ended up with 11 podium finishes at the end of the day, but in the end Iowa Central earned more points through advancement and win type to win.
Mia Siqueiros was the champion at 103. Molly Sek won 110. Hailey Media powered through two ranked wrestlers to win at 117.
Lastly, Ayana Fletcher won 160.
Of the three remaining weight classes, Hawkeye, Indian Hills and NIACC split the champions.
No. 1 at 180 in the country was Paola Rodriguez and she won two matches to take first.
Hawkeye's Allison Krum won 207 which had just five wrestlers compete -- not taking anything away for the nation's No. 4.
Valerie Smith of NIACC won at 285. The sophomore hopes to take the momentum to the National Invite March 7-8 back in Council Bluffs.
Notably, Indian Hills, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, only brought four ranked wrestlers to the non-qualifying championships. The Warriors boast a nation-best 15 ranked wrestlers and will remain the favorite to win the NJCAA National Championship -- a title they have held each of the last two seasons.
However, Iowa Western did win the dual between the two teams this season. Along with Iowa Central, expect to see the trio of ICCAC's best near the top of the leaderboard come March.
