Match of the Week: #2 Kirkwood def #10 Iowa Central, 3-0

No. 2 ranked Kirkwood propelled past #10 Iowa Western for the sweep at home this week, but it was anything but easy in what was the regular season conference championship decider.

The 3-0 match score doesn't paint the picture for the top-10 match-up as Iowa Central traveled to Cedar Rapids. The opening set was a 25-18 win by Kirkwood as they tallied 15 kills in 30 attempts. For Iowa Central it was just seven kills in 30 attempts in the opening set.

In the second set the Tritons found a groove racking up 14 kills with a 30% kill percentage. This effort Iowa Central took the second set all the way until the last points, losing 26-24. Kirkwood in the second set hit 23% and stacked up 12 more kills in the match.

What would be the final set for the match ended 25-19 in favor of the #2 team in the NJCAA DII rankings, Kirkwood. Kirkwood hit 45% and tallied 12 more kills on the match.

For Kirkwood in the sweep there was help all around the court. Kaci Johnson led the team in kills (10), assists (20), digs (23) and points (12). Marissa Cahoy and Emma Meester both had nine kills during the match for the Eagles. In the assists category behind Johnson was Sydney Matthias with 14 assists, she also had an ace in the match. Lily VanSeveren helped Kirkwood with 15 digs in the contest, second highest on the team. Ava Haris-Shepard helped defensively as well with 5 total blocks in the match, two solo and three block assists.

The Tritons had help from around the roster as well in the contest. Araya Garrison led the way in kills with eight, behind her is Emily Goodner with seven kills. Goodner also led Iowa Central in digs with eight. Dani Anela Kapu led the Tritons with 16 assists and was second on the team in digs with seven over the three sets. Defensively by the net it was Olivia Sturgis that led the team with three blocks.

Up next for Kirkwood they play in Fort Dodge, having four matches this upcoming weekend, before heading home for an ICCAC match-up against Southwestern on Oct. 30th at 7:00 p.m. You can catch this game on the ICCAC Sports Network.

For Iowa Central they will also participate in the tournament at home before taking on Iowa Lakes in Fort Dodge at 7:00 p.m. on the final conference night of the season, Oct. 30. You can watch this match on the Tritons Nation YouTube account.
