2023 All-Region | Division I Volleyball
The ICCAC announced the 2023 Division I Volleyball All-Region Team on Thursday. Indian Hills, a 2023 National Tournament qualifier, has achieved a record of 28-10 for the 2023 season while Iowa Western reached the District Championship match, and finished 16-19.
Four Warriors were named to the All-Region Team — led by outside hitter and the 2023 Player of the Year, Kinga Michalska. The sophomore, with matches left to play, is fourth in the NJCAA in kills this season, with 514. Also in the top ten, Kinga is No. 7 with 3.92 kills per set and fifth in total scored points with 553. Michalska's blocking also helps her team on defense; she's had 40 total blocks this season.
Michalska helped the Warriors win the District Tournament with wins over Malcolm X (Ill.) and Vincennes (Ind.). While playing against Malcolm X, Michalska hit the 500-kill milestone, becoming the first Warrior to do so since Mariana Rodrigues in 2019. Currently, Kinga is sixth in all-time school history, with 943 career kills.
Also helping lead Indian Hills to a Midwest A District Championship and their NJCAA National Tournament bid were outside/opposite hitter Larissa Scatamburlo, libero Sabrina Noguiera Da Silva and outside hitter Sara Van Gisteren.
Van Gisteren is the team's second-leading scorer with 447 kills and 546.5 points, both top 20 in the nation.
Da Silvia is also a leading contender to the Warrior's success. She is tenth in the NJCAA in digs, with 589 and 21st in serves received.
Scataburlo is fourth on the team in kills, with a hitting efficiency of .172, helping the Warriors compete in their postseason competition. She has been a solid contributor for Indian Hills in each of the past two seasons.
Iowa Western placed three players on this year's All-Region list. The Reivers, who ended their season as the Midwest B runners-up, rewarded Carol Herrero, Julia Udell and Yuna Ansquer.
Herrero, an outside hitter, has made herself one of the strongest serve-receive passers in the country, coming in at No. 6. The freshman from Brazil is leading the team in 408 kills and 469.5 points scored; both are top 20 in the nation. Herrero is also second on the team in digs with 310.
Udell, The Reivers libero, led the team in 657 digs this season — averaging 5.02 digs per set. Making her sixth in the country in digs and 18th in digs per set.
Setter Yuna Ansquer places herself in the top ten in the country in assists totaling 1213, and assists per set, 9.4.
Lyndsey Michel of Indian Hills was named ICCAC Division I Coach of the Year. Michel led the Warriors to back-to-back NJCAA Tournament appearances and their third in the last five seasons. Last season, in 2022, Michel became the all-time winningest coach in school history when the Warriors made it into the final four in the NJCAA National Tournament.
