Match of the Week: NIACC def. Marshalltown, 3-1

There was a lot on the line on Wednesday night between NIACC and Marshalltown. With the No. 8 seed up for grabs, the game was a play-in to the Region 11 Tournament.

Marshalltown was the home team and held a one game advantage over the NIACC Trojans. Out of the shoot, the Tigers took control of the match with a 25-18 first set for a 1-0 lead. They benefited from 12 NIACC errors, to just three committed on their end. 

Set two is when everything flipped. NIACC cut their errors in half, and won the set 25-18 to seize momentum. They carried that momentum throughout the third set, winning 25-18, again. 

Marshalltown did not go without putting up a fight. The fourth set went to extra points, and the Tigers tallied 17 kills in the set, a match-high, but it was not enough, as NIACC prevailed with a 26-24 fourth set win, and a 3-1 victory. 

NIACC was led by Jaida Hansen who had 12 kills. Zhane Singer had 10 and Alyssa Wicerksheim and Kelly Miller each had eight. Wickersheim had 23 digs while Kennedy Schwieshow had 21. Emily Opstvedt and Iwalani Betran each had 20+ assists. 

For Marshalltown, Isneydy De La Rosa led the match with 18 kills and had 14 digs as well. Yafriel Payano Pichardo had a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Brittany Sichra had 29 digs to lead all players. 

NIACC advances to the Region 11 Tournament with the win -- eliminating Marshalltown from postseason play. The Trojans will face No. 1 seed DMACC in Boone on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
