Match of the Week: Iowa Western @ RV Indian Hills

Indian Hills (10-6) hosted Iowa Western (5-12) in the first of three matches the teams are scheduled to play during the regular season to determine who is the Region 11-A representative at the Midwest District Tournament. 

The Warriors came into the match having won the last two matches the teams played against each other. The Reivers on the other hand, were on a four-match losing streak. 

On Tuesday, the Warriors came out and picked up wins in the first two sets, but they did not come easy. The first set went Indian Hills way 25-20 before the second set went into extra points, but again benefitted the Warriors at 26-24. 

Iowa Western fought valiantly throughout the entire match, scoring 20 or more points in each set. In Set 3, they rallied to a competitive 29-27 win. It was all the Reivers could muster, however, as the Warriors pulled away 25-22 in the fourth set to win the match, their third in a row. 

The win gave the Warriors their fifth win in their last six matches, which has propelled them back into the national poll conversation. 

Leading the way for Indian Hills was hitter Kinga Michalska. The sophomore posted a match-high 14 kills. Srar Van Gisteren had 13 kills as well from the Warriors side.  Offensively, five Warriors had 10 or more points, including Fernanda Izar who had five kills and nine blocks, three of them solo. 

Ana Carolina Westerich had 37 assists, while Emme Wilson had 12. Defensively, Sabrina Nogueira Da Silva had 18 digs while Carolina Westerich and Sasha Vidal each had nine.

For Iowa Western, they were led by four hitters that had nine or more kills. Stephanie Sarmezan had 12, Carol Herreo had 11 and Gracilove Littlejohn and Sarai Simpson each had nine. 

Yuna Ansquer was the main facilitator with 28 assists, and defensive specialist Julia Udell had 24 digs -- typical of the sophomore. 

Indian Hills takes a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series this season. The two will meet again next on Oct. 11 in Council Bluffs.
