Game of the Week (#5 Iowa Central def. #7 Kirkwood)
It was a battle of two top 10 teams in this week's Match of the Week. The #5 Iowa Central Tritons were on the road to face off against the seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles.
The home team Eagles took an early 1-0 lead after winning the first set 25-22 having 13 kills in the set. The Trions would bounce back in the second set racking up 19 kills in the 25-21 win.
These two teams traded haymakers as Kirkwood would win the third 25-22. With their backs against the wall Iowa Central was one slip up away from a loss. The Tritons would prevail in the fourth set winning 25-22, on to the last set knotted at 2-2.
Iowa Central with the momentum would have 13 kills in the final set winning 15-13 and taking the match 3-2 from Kirkwood.
Iowa Central was led by Katilyn Steffes in kills with 31, Jori Hajek with team-leading 16 digs in the contests, Michaelah Petowiak had six blocks, and Mercedes Madlock with 57 assists in the 3-2 victory.
Kirkwood was led by Lexi Hearn with 12 kills, Ava Morris with 10 blocks, Sierra Marshall with 20 digs and Gracie Ehret with 49 assists and two aces.
With the win, Iowa Central won their fifth-consecutive regular season crown -- and will host the Region 11-A Tourament first round against Southeastern.
Kirkwood is the No. 2 overall seed and the road will go through Cedar Rapids should the Eagles beat NIACC on Saturday in the Region 11-B semifinals.
