Iowa Western Sweeps Indoor Track Special Awards
Last Saturday, Iowa Western celebrated their first ever Region XI Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship. In addition, the Reivers took home hardware for both the 2021 Female Athlete of the Year and Women's Coach of the Year.
Nickisha Pryce was voted the 2021 Indoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year. The freshman from Clarendon, Jamaica competed in the 200-meter, 400-meter and the 4x400-meter relay. Pryce took first in the 200 and 400 meters, setting the Region XI record in both events. Her times of 23.71 and 55.07 rank as the top times in the nation this season. . Pryce's domination at the Region XI Championships helped separate Iowa Western from the second-place team by 151 points.
Additionally, Iowa Western head coach Douglas Marshall was named the 2021 Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. After finishing sixth at the Region XI Championship last year, Marshall led the Reivers to the 2021 Regional Championship.
Not only did Iowa Western top the rest of the field, they broke four Region XI records and four Iowa Western records. Along with chasing PRs and titles, Marshall focuses on academic success. In his first two seasons with Iowa Western, his teams have improved their GPA average each semester.
Notably, Iowa Western's Dyandra Gray (60-meter hurdles) and Alliyah McNeil (high jump) set new Region XI Meet records to earn First Team All-Region honors in those events.
2020 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Champion, Faith Chepengat, earned First Team honors in the 5000-meter and distance medley relay, and Second Team honors in the mile run.
Odell Frye was the 60-meter champion from Iowa Central. She broke the Region XI Meet record with a time of 7.42.
Hawkeye's Ryann Portch was recognized three times for her win in the 1000-meter, second place finish in the 600-meter and third place in the 4x400-meter relay.
