Iowa Western Wins Second National Title
For the first time since 2013, Iowa Western Women's Soccer are NJCAA National Champions.
The ninth-seeded Reivers battled to a 1-0 win over the No. 10 seed, Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon. They picked up their goal in the first half as the team's top goal scorer Marta Llopis stepped up to a penalty kick in 35 minutes into the half. She went right, the keeper went left and the ball hit the back of the net. It was Llopis's thrid goal of the tournament, tying for the team lead along with Hanna Schimmer.
The Reivers dominated the game offensively, firing 18 shots compared to 8 for Salt Lake. However, only five of those were on net.
Iowa Western's Bella Washington stopped the five attempts put on frame to keep the Bruins scoreless -- and capping off the first shutout at the National Tournament.
The Reivers had reached the National Tournament six out of the last eight seasons since their last title. It is the first championship under head coach Adam Sanchez, who became Iowa Western's head coach in 2015.
