ICCAC Promotes Division I All-Region Selections
The ICCAC Division I Women's Soccer released the All-Region selections after the spring 2021 season. Selections were based on a team's finish within the standings.
After winning at least a share of the regular season title for the 15th year in a row, Iowa Western received four First Team selections. Sophomore forward Laura Linares headlined the group, earning Division I Player of the Year honors. Linares had six goals and nine assists ICCAC play, leading the conference in assists total and scoring the fifth most goals. She netted one hat trick against Iowa Central on April 21, and had an assist in the first seven games of the year.
Overall she has tallied seven goals and 10 assists heading into the National Tournament.
Joining Linares on First Team were midfielders Paula Boza and Yoshiki Kitadi and goalkeeper Judit Gonzalez.
Boza is tied for the team-lead in goals with 10 despite missing the Reivers' three postseason games to date. In a two-game stretch early in the year, Boza had six goals, including a four-goal performance against Hawkeye.
Kitadi scored nine goals and added two assists in 133 games through district tournament play.
In net for the Reivers for the last two seasons has been Gonzalez. The sophomore has bolstered a defense that has allowed just two goals all season. The Reivers did not allow a goal for the first eight games of the season. Specifically, Gonzalez has been in net in 11 of the teams 13 games, has a record of 10-1 and has six shutouts.
The Spring 2021 Coach of the Year award went to Iowa Western's Adam Sanchez. The Reivers won their fifth consecutive Region XI Championship and advanced to the NJCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. Currently, Iowa Western has a record of 12-1.
Indian Hills came in second place, with their only two losses all season coming at the hands of Iowa Western.
Representing the Warriors on First Team was forward Bailey Wiemann, midfielder Risa Ogasawara and keeper Elani Mears.
Wiemann was the second-leading goal scorer in the conference netting 11 goals and is tied with Linares for the assist-lead with 10. Wiemann broke out in the Region XI Tournament, scoring all four goals in a 4-0 win over Iowa Central.
Ogasawara was Indian Hills' second-most productive offensive outlet. She ended the season with seven goals and six assists.
In goal was Mears. She helped Indian Hills to a runner-up Region XI finish and had four shutouts on her way to an 11-2 record, recording 64 saves.
Iowa Central and Iowa Lakes each placed two players on the 11 player First Team list.
Tritons recognized forwards Julia Herbst and Elicia Mulvaney. Herbst, a sophomore, led the ICCAC in goals this season with 14 . She averaged one goal per game, and scored six goals in the first game of the year in a win over Scott. In her career, Herbst finished with 39 goals after having 25 in her freshman campaign.
Mulvaney complimented Herbst providing eight goals and eight assists this season.
Rounding out the First Team were Lakers Alexis Vasquez and Danielle Grimmer. Vasquez had two goals of and one assist while Grimmer held the backline for the Iowa Lakes defense.
