2023 North Central District Wrestling Results

Iowa Western took home their second District title in school history on Sunday, their first since 2020. The Reivers were powered by winning six of the 10 weight class crowns -- and earning a runner up spot in another. 

Jakason Burks, who was named the ICCAC Wrestler of the Year after the event, won the 125 pound class for the second year in a row. A former Oklahoma State Cowboy, is currently the No. 1 ranked in the class. Last year he finished as the NJCAA runner up. 

Paul Ruff came out victorious in the 133 pound weight class, taking down No. 10 Manny Limon of Indian Hills in a 7-2 decision. Malachi Bordovsky is the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 141 and proved his top ranking among the ICCAC. He beat No. 8 Isaac Church in the finals. 

At 157 pounds, Fabian Padilla powered through three matches, one of two wrestlers on the day to win while not receiving a bye. Last year's National runner up beat the No. 2 ranked wrestler -- Diego Isorida of Ellsworth -- in the final. 

Grant Lyman won the 174 pound class which included a win over No. 2 ranked Phil Smith Jr. of Iowa Central. The sophomore is a returning All-American from last year's National Tournament. 

Rounding out Iowa Western's winners was Brett Mower who dominated at 197. Mower handled Isaiah Laguna before pinning the No. 9 ranked John Lovett in the final. Mower is ranked No. 4 and looked dominant on Sunday.

Other winners included Ellsworth 165 pounder Mirzo Khayitov. In two 4-2 decisions, Khayitov took the crown -- one that was held by Christian Minto for the past two seasons. He fell to Minto at last year's NJCAA Championship in the national championship match.

Matt Sarbo, the 149 pounder out of Iowa Central, won the Triton's lone weight class. He held serve as the No. 3 ranked wrestler -- the highest among ICCAC wrestlers in that class. 

NIACC's Ein Carlos was the other champion that won three matches on the day en route to a championship. Carlos took the 184 pound class that saw a number of injury defaults and forfeits during the day. Top to bottom, 184 may be the toughest class in the ICCAC.

At heavyweight, top seeded Kawaun Deboe handled business with a 3-0 win over No. 7 Hugo Harp of Iowa Central in the championship match. He became the sixth Warrior in school history to win a District crown.
