Spring 2022 ICCAC Women's Golf Preview
Six ICCAC Women's Golf teams return to the links this March. After being placed in a District Tournament as the qualifier for the National Tournament -- the road goes through Rolling Hills Golf Course in Milford, Kan. where they will join up with Region VI and Region IX.
Region VI teams, from Kansas, include Barton, Coffeyville, Dodge City and Fort Scott. Region IX, from Wyoming and Colorado, include Central Wyoming, Northeastern and Otero.
The top two teams and three individuals will qualify for the National Tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Coming into the 2022 season at the top of the ICCAC preseason coaches poll is Iowa Western.
The Reivers finished off the 2021 season with a 4th place finish at the NJCAA Women's National Championships last year. The team has continued their winning ways into the fall season with three tournament wins as a team. The team is very solid top to bottom but this year with returners and newcomers. Their top four of Minhae Gwon, Luisa Gibson, Katie Graham and Seria Kubo combined for five first place finishes this fall and 15 top 5 finishes. The team also picks up Madi Schlaepfer, a transfer from William Penn, who will bring even more experience to this already impressive team. Iowa Western will look to continue their dominance in the ICCAC and are serious favorites to be top finishers as a team at the national championships.
Iowa Lakes and DMACC come into the year at No. 2 and 3 respectively in the coaches poll.
Iowa Lakes had a very solid fall season in 2021 picking up three tournament wins as a team. At the top of the lineup for the Lakers are Kelly Winter and Isabella Santistevan who both picked up individual first place finishes this fall.
DMACC is led by returner Krista Swenson and two freshmen Ashley Michel and Taylor Balsley. The trio had several top 5 and top 10 finishes in the fall but couldn't put it all together during the same tournament to pick up the team win. If they can play consistently and put it all together, they can be a very successful team this spring.
NIACC is right in the middle of the pack this season and will be trying to move up the rankings of the ICCAC on a team made up of four freshmen. The Trojans showed a lot of improvement through the fall season with solid placings from their leaders Ashley Voves and Hailey Panos. If the returners and newcomers can come together they could upset the power dynamic in the conference.
Iowa Central and Southeastern come into the season with very similar situations. Both programs come into the year without full teams. However, their golfers will still be competing to try and make it to the national meet and place individually. Kelly Boleyn will look to repeat as a national qualifier and saw success during the fall, winning the lone tournament she entered in.
