ICCAC Women's Golf All-Region & Special Awards
The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference has officially announced the All-Region performers for the 2020-21 Women's Golf season. The Golfer of the Year and Coach of the Year have also been announced with the three All-Region Teams.
Iowa Western's Luisa Gibson claimed the 2021 Women's Golfer of the Year honors. The freshman finished in the top ten at every tournament she played in all year, including a win at the Region XI Tournament. In the two-day event, Gibson had the low round of the tournament with a 73 on Day 1. Gibson and her teammates were the only players that were able to break 80 either day. The total of 153 won the event by three strokes. Gibson played well all year long and matched her season low with that 73.
With a spring season average of 75.3, she was among the best players not just in the conference, but in the nation. Her impressive performances have earned the 29th ranking in the country at the NJCAA level.
Derrick Thompson was named the 2021 Coach of the Year. Thompson led the Reivers to their 11th straight Region XI Championship.
Iowa Western led the way with five All-Region selections and three on First Team.
Gibson was joined by teammates Seira Kubo and Katie Schweers who finished second and third at the Region Tournament. Kubo is ranked 28th according to Golfstat and shot 156 with rounds of 82 and 74 at Otter Creek. The combined effort was good enough for runner-up.
Schweers finished the tournament in third with rounds of 84-76 for a third-place finish with a 160 total. She is another Reiver national qualifier and ends the regular season ranked at No. 84 in the nation according to Golfstat.
