Kirkwood's Muhl Reaches 1000 Wins
With Kirkwood's 98-32 win over Ellsworth on Saturday, head coach Kim Muhl collected his 1000th career victory.
Now in his 34th season as the Eagles head coach, Muhl can now check off another milestone on his long list of career accomplishments.
He began at Kirkwood in September of 1989 and since then has led his teams to 21 national tournament appearances and eight NJCAA National Championships. Today's win was the 22nd of the season -- which gives him 34 straight 20-win seasons. In 33 full seasons he's averaged 29.6 wins per season (978 wins prior to this season.), and has never had a losing season.
Muhl has been named the Region 11 Coach of the Year 20 times as well as National Coach of the Year (or "Outstanding Coach of the Tournament") during each of his national championship runs.
He holds the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball record of 39 straight wins and from 2006 until February 2011 his teams won 106 straight conference games. His season-high win total is 37 in 2009-10 and 2016-17 when the Eagles went 37-0.
To date, Muhl's record is 1000-168 (.936) with a 412-33 record at home. He becomes just the second NJCAA Women's Basketball coach in history to reach 1000 wins, trailing only Copiah-Lincoln's (Miss.) Gwyn Young -- who stands at 1004 wins.
In 2011, Muhl was elected to the NJCAA Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and on Feb. 3 was inducted to the Kirkwood Athletics Hall of Fame.
