Hawkeye Wins First Trap Title; Reivers Take Skeet, Clay Hardware
WAUKEE, Iowa - Hawkeye picked up their first-ever ICCAC Trap Shooting conference championship title last weekend at the 2022 Iowa Collegiate Clay Target Championships. The RedTails, who have won the East Division for the past five seasons, scored a 463 (on a tough day for all shooters) to prevail. They were led by Matthew Rippel who posted a 96, good for third on the men's individual leaderboard. Two 93s from Colton Crooks and Blaedyn Benscoter boosted Hawkeye -- their team was rounded out by Braden Brown, 91, and Connor Ehlert, 90.
The RedTails edged out Southeastern by six targets for the 2022 crown. The Blackhawks were led by Abram Lorence. One of the best shooters in the conference all season, Lorence was the individual silver medalist, shooting a 97.
Maddie Caston, Lorence's teammate, took the women's top trap prize. She led all women's shooters with a 91.
The individual men's champion was Cole Sorenson of Southwestern. Sorenson led all shooters hitting 98 of 100 targets.
This season, the ICCAC added skeet and sporting clays as disciplines. The Iowa Western Reivers took home both titles in those categories, and had three of the four individual champions.
Tevin Statzer was the men's individual champion for skeet. He dropped 99 of 100 targets, and won the tie-breaker (4-3 in a shootoff) over Sorenson who also posted a 99.
The women's skeet champion was Hawkeye's Elizabeth Eisenbarth. She knocked down 97 targets, good for fourth among all skeet shooters.
For sporting clays -- Iowa Western's Nathan Schulte and Reegan Filip topped the men's and women's leaderboards hitting 76 and 64 targets, respectively.
Iowa Western fended off Iowa Central in each discipline for the team titles. They won 479-467 in skeet and 219-200 in sporting clays.
