2020 NJCAA Region XI Championships | Results
Iowa Central's Division I dominance continued, while NIACC & Hawkeye split the inaugural Division II titles.
FORT DODGE, IA - The ICCAC entered the first day of November with the 2020 NJCAA Region XI Championships which were held at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, IA. The host Iowa Central swept the Division I championships with the men and women taking both. NIACC Men and Hawkeye Women each won a Division II title in the first-ever cross country divisional split.
On the Division I men's side, Iowa Central ran to their eighth straight Region XI title. The Tritons had three top-5 finishers and had 7 in the top-15. The top finishers for the Tritons began with Kelvin Bungei winning the individual medal running a 25:12.83 which was 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Yonas Mogas from Iowa Western. Freshman Pur Biel came in third with a time of 25:38.54 and Hunter Klimek finished right behind Biel placing fourth (26:08.79).
Iowa Western finished in second place in the team standings with a score of 40. The Reivers were led by freshman Yonas Mogos who was the runner-up running a time of 25:27.27. The next top finishers for the Reivers were Kassim Kibet who finished fifth (26:12.47) and Wimachmorr Gilo placed sixth finishing two-tenths of a second behind Kibet (26:12.49).
Finishing in third place overall, Indian Hills accounted for two finishers in the top-10. Warriors' Nick O'Connor finished in seventh place running two seconds ahead of eighth place with a time of 26:15.82. The next Warriors finisher was Jackson Burnett who placed 10th crossing the finish line at 26:49.49.
To round out Division I, Southwestern came in fourth place overall. The Spartans had one top-15 finisher which was freshman Josh Baudler who finished 27:10.45.
In Division II, NIACC took the crown filling up the individual standings. The Trojans had four runners finish in the top-5 with Melvin Kipkemboi leading the pack finishing the 8k race at 25:50.34. Sophomore Jorge Ruiz was tailing his teammate finishing in second, five seconds behind Kipkemboi with a time of 25:55.28. The next two finishers for the Trojans finished fourth and fifth with Vincente Correia (26:51.77) and Jalen Petersen (27:14.38).
Hawkeye finished in second place overall with two RedTails runners finishing in the top-6. Sophomore Sam Mickelson finished in third place individually running a time of 26:22.77 and his teammate Brandon Conrad placed sixth (27:19.38).
DMACC didn't place in the team standings but had three runners finish. Southeastern, the fourth Division II school, did not attend the Regional Championships.
For the women, Iowa Central wrap up their 17th consecutive Region XI title with four runners finishing in the top-5. The Tritons accounted for second, third, fourth, and fifth place. Eleonora Curtabbi was the runner-up with a time of 17:58.48, Rosalie Fish came in third (18:47.52), Lilia Alvarez finished fourth (19:44.56) and Kate Miron placed fifth (20:21.83).
The runner-up in the team standings was Iowa Western were sophomore Faith Linga who was the individual champion running a time of 17:32.53. The next Reiver finisher was Mohussin Abakar who placed in sixth crossing the finish line at 20:23.92.
Indian Hills had one runner finish in the top-10 and the Warriors finished third overall. The lone top-10 finisher for the Warriors was Shiggo Shadin who finished in ninth place running a 20:58.49 in the 5k race.
On the Division II side, Hawkeye took their first ever Region XI title dominating the field with four top-5 finishers. The RedTails were led by freshman Ryann Portch who ran a 19:30.45 which was good for second place. The next RedTail finishers all finished one right behind the other with Kaylee Leicht coming in third (20:05.31), Sophie Spargur in fourth (20:55.27), and Hannah Payne finishing in fifth (21:20.89).
NIACC didn't have enough finishers place leaving them out of the standings but had freshman Sarah Bertry winning the individual medal running a 19:02.59.
