2019 Cross Country All-Region Recognized
Each year, the ICCAC All-Region Teams are determined by their place at the Region XI Championships.
In 2019, Iowa Central dominated the field again, taking home 12 of the 25 All-Region allotments. The Tritons finished with the 8 of the top 10, including the Region XI Individual Champion and 2019 ICCAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year, Awet Yohannes. Yohannes (24:16.2) finished just .9 seconds ahead of second-place finisher and fellow First Team All-Region qualifier, Shawn Kiptoo (24:17.1) of Iowa Western.
Although Iowa Central took 80 percent of the top 10, Iowa Western posted the No. 2 and No. 3 finishers at this year's regionals. Kassim Kibet finished in 3rd to represent the Reivers on First Team.
Other members of the Men's First Team All-Region were Iowa Central's Yiech Pur Biel, Noah Bundrock, Noah Friske and Chris Levario.
On the women's side, the 2019 Female Athlete of the Year went to Faith Chepengat. The sophomore from Kenya had a fantastic regular season, twice named the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week. Chepengat finished second at the 2019 Region XI Championships behind the Individual Champion Winrose Chesang.
Iowa Central's best runner, also a two-time USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week this year, Chesang cruised to an easy Regional Championship, finishing 17 seconds ahead of Chepengat.
Iowa Central took four other spots on First Team (Lilian Busienei (3rd), Eleonora Curtabbi (4th), Florence Uwajeneza (5th) and Lilia Alvarez (7th), while Emmy Jepkemei of Iowa Western rounded out the top-7.
Next up for the NJCAA Cross Country are the 2019 NJCAA National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Iowa Central hopes to compete for both team titles, while Yohannes, Kiptoo, Chesang, Chepengat, and others have a shot at the individual title.
