2018 Cross Country All-Region
Regional Crown winners Kipchirchir and Sullivan earn Athlete of the Year honors.
The ICCAC Cross Country All-Region performers were recognized following the 2018 Region XI Championships last Friday in the Davenport.
Iowa Central led the way with a total of 11 First Team All-Region performers, five on the men's side and six on the women's. For perspective, the top seven finishers at the Region XI Championship earn First Team honors. The eighth-place thru 14th place finishers are recognized as Second Team honorees while 15th thru 25th earn Honorable Mention.
19 total Tritons found themselves on an All-Region team after the race was over. Notably of the bunch were Abeba Sullivan, the 2018 women's champion and Ezekiel Kipchirchir, the 2018 men's champion. Both of them respectively earned 2018 ICCAC Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Kipchirchir's performance was exceptional as his time of 24:16.1 set a new Region XI Championship record.
Sullivan finished with a time of 18:38.1 which was a 12-second improvement from her time a season ago when she finished in third.
Other Tritons who finished on First Team include, on the women's side, Lilian Busienei, Florence Uwajenza, Winrose Chesang, Marion Bartilol and Marta Lukijaniuk. Bartilol and Lukijaniuk were 2017 First Team performers as well.
Representing the Iowa Central men were Awet Yohannes, Milos Pendic, Innocent Murwanashyaka and Jhordan Ccope.
Outside of Iowa Central, three runners notched First Team honors. Newcomer Marcus Graham of Indian Hills finished in second place at the Regional Championship, just six seconds behind Kipchirchir. His teammate, Michael Demeyer finished in sixth place to round out the top seven.
The lone, non-Triton woman was sophomore Joanna Topham of Hawkeye. She finished in seventh place. She was a Second Team performer in 2017.
