The 100 runners, who were mostly Iowans, completed the task on the Johnston High School track in 28 hours, 1 minute and 49 seconds. They broke the record of 30:01.15 by the Greenville, South Carolina Track Club in May of 2011.
Zarate, who will be a sophomore at NIACC this fall, ran his leg in 16 minutes, 34 seconds. Blomquist, who will run at Southwest Minnesota in the fall, ran his 5K in 18:01 and Kidman, who was a freshman on the NIACC team last year, ran 19:34.
The record still needs to be verified by Guiness, which could take months. The entire event had to be taped and exchanges between the runners had to be photographed.
