2021 Region XI Multi Wrap-Up and Outdoor Championship Preview
The first part of the 2021 Region XI Outdoor Track & Field Championships took place last weekend in Council Bluffs with the multi competition.
The men competed in the decathlon and the women participated in the heptathlon over the two days of competition. Iowa Central had impressive performances and were able to jump out to an early lead in the team rankings coming in with Iowa Central claiming 22 points. The Tritons were led by Aries Scott who won the shot put, high jump, 400-meter, discus, and 1500-meter. Iowa Western also had a decent showing as their decathletes picked up 11 points for the host team.
In the women's events, more schools participated as four teams picked up points. Southwestern took the top spot and with it, ten points in the team rankings thanks to Fane Sauvakacolo, who took first and became the first Region XI Champion for track & field in Spartan history.
Close behind, Hawkeye adds nine points and Iowa Central claims eight. In fourth place, Iowa Western added six points.
The 2021 Region XI Outdoor Track & Field Championship continues this weekend, May 1 & 2 in Council Bluffs at the Reiver Athletic Complex on Iowa Western's campus.
Iowa Central will be looking to add another Region Championship to their trophy case. The Triton Men have dominated the Region XI Championships over the last decade winning every meet held since 2009.
Keep an eye out for Iowa Western, who won the women's 2021 NJCAA Indoor National Championship back in March and are the reigning Region XI Champions going back to 2019 with the 2020 meet canceled due to COVID.
Events will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and pick up again on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
