Iowa Central Sweeps at Jack Jennett Open
Iowa Central, Hawkeye, NIACC, Southwestern, and Southeastern brought their teams to Cedar Falls on Thursday for the Jack Jennett Open at the University of Northern Iowa. Iowa Central swept both the men's and women's overall standings with a dominating performance on the men's side and the women were just able to sneak by Hawkeye.
The Tritons took home victories in six out of the 11 scored events. Sophomore Dashinelle Dyer won the prelims and finals in the 60-meter dash with times of 6.82 and 6.79, respectively. His teammates Jerome Jesup and Hayden Cobbs finished on the podium in second and third in both the preliminary and final races.
Other winners on the day for the Tritons were Jaheem Hayles winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.08. Robin Aguilar Gonzalez captured the top spot in the 800-meter finishing in 1:59.51. Kelvin Bungei finished the mile in 4:20.57, five seconds ahead of second place. Iowa Central also captured the top three spots in the 4X800-meter relay, including the winning group finish sub-eight minutes with a 7:59.64. Overall the Tritons amassed 170 points, with runner ups Hawkeye finishing with 96.
Hawkeye also had an impressive day as far as wins were concerned. They took the top spots in the other five races. Winners for the redtails saw Blake Osborn winning the 200-meter in 22.26. Edgar Tapia won the 400-meter in 52.89. Koby Brackmeyer won the 600-meter by sevon seconds with a time of 1:24.13. Sam Mickelson locked up the 3000-meter victory as he was the only runner under nine minutes with his impressive 8:54.94. The team also took home the 4X400-meter relay finishing the mile with a 3:23.8.
The women's side of things were much closer, Iowa Central was still able to claim the team title at the meet but rather than dominating the field, they squeaked out a one point over Hawkeye. Scoring 111 points, they beat out Hawkeye and their 110. There also was close competition for fourth place, as Southeastern also had one point more than the team directly below them, they beat out fifth place Southwestern by scoring 27 to the Spartan's 26. Iowa Central won five of the ten scored events, just like the men they swept the 60m dash events. Sophomore Hannah Connell was victorious in three events as she won the prelims and finals in the 60-meter with times of 7.61 and 7.56. Connell was also on Iowa Central's victorious 4X400-meter relay.
The Redtails had their shot at earning the team title with a great performance on the day. Victories in three events came from Kylee Neighbors and her 60-meter hurdle win running a 9.91. Ryann Portch claimed the 800-meter victory in 2:23.27. And the 3000-meter saw Mindi Sande cruising to the finish line first in 12:31.15.
Team standings looked pretty similar on both the men's and women's side of things. Top three on both sides finished with Iowa Central in first, Hawkeye in second, and NIACC in third. Southwestern took fourth in the men's competition and the women finished fifth. Southeastern flipped that around and finished fifth in the men's events and the women took fourth.
