Division I Selects Spring's Best
The Spring 2021 Division I Men's Soccer All-Region teams were announced on Tuesday with Iowa Western headlining the team, earning four First Team recognitions including both the Player and Coach of the Year.
The ICCAC Division I Player of the Year was given to Reiver Giorgio Probo. The Italian midfielder was part of the core that helped lead Iowa Western to their first Region XI Tournament Championship since 2016. Probo, only a freshman, had one goal and five assists in 11 conference games and now after winning the Midwest District Championship, has compiled three goals and six assists on the season.
Joining Probo on the First Team was the team's leading scorer, Ivan Callado. Callado leads the conference to date with 16 goals and has three assists, all while missing the District tournament. Three times this season Callado recorded a hat trick including the team's first two games of the year.
Goalkeeper Patrick Millard was recognized as First Team selection from Iowa Western. The Aussie freshman has a 13-0 record heading into the National Tournament and has allowed just five goals all season, including six shutouts. He leads the conference in save percentage at .857 overall and had a .889 save percentage in conference play. Millard was instrumental in the District Championship match, as he stopped three Iowa Lakes shots as the game went to penalty kicks.
The last selection from Iowa Western was forward Ibrahim Conde. Conde is second on the team and third in ICCAC Division I with nine goals. He had two multi-goal games this season including a four-goal game against Northeast in the first game of the year.
Coach of the Year was voted in favor of Mike Brown. As stated, the Reivers advanced to their second straight NJCAA National Tournament, this time earning it automatically by winning the District. It was the second time in as many seasons under Brown's watch the Reivers have won the regular season crown. Iowa Western holds a 13-0-2 record this spring and are the No. 1 ranked team in the country.
Iowa Lakes finished as the Region XI Tournament runner up for the third year in a row. The Lakers also played to a District runner up finish and representing them on First Team were David Owusu, Sebastian Zapata and Sofian Maghouz.
Maghouz and Owusu each had eight goals through the completion of the district tournament, with the major difference coming in games played. Owusu only played in nine games due to injury, while Maghouz played in 14 of the Lakers 15 contests.
Zapata was the leader of Iowa Lakes defense which allowed 1.27 goals per game, and outside games against Iowa Western, gave up just .72 per match.
Marshalltown received two selections after finishing third this season. The previously two-time defending Region XI Champions, saw Guilhereme Pereira and Fumiya Shiraishi tagged with First Team recognition.
Pereira led the team in goals for the second-straight season, netting six goals in 12 games, after scoring 11 in 20 games in 2019. He was also tied on the team with four assists to lead the category.
Shiraishi had three goals and one assist this year. The freshman from Japan would have seen more had he played more, but was sidelined during five of the teams 13 contests.
Concluding the Spring 2021 First Team All-Region were lone selections from Indian Hills and Iowa Central. The Warriors placed forward Shogo Koike on First Team while the Tritons recognized their forward Lucas Hazi Pollacchi.
