Kirkwood Wins Region XI Championship

RIVERSIDE, Iowa - Kirkwood held off Iowa Central by two-strokes to win their sixth consecutive Region XI Tournament title and 15th in the last 17 years.. They were led by sophomore James Morgan (+2), who won his second straight individual title finishing three shots in front of his teammate Kolby Schackelford (+5). 

Morgan had the low round of the tournament, along with Iowa Central's Austin Erickson, when they began the tournament with a opening round 70. He followed that up with a second round 76, and ended with a tie for the lowest final round score of 72. 

Morgan is the first Eagle to win multiple Region XI Championships, which has been won by a Kirkwood golfer each year dating back to at least 2010.

The Eagles edged the Tritons after both teams shot a final round team score of 298. Rounding out the Kirkwood's championship contributors were JD Pollard (+13) who finished in a tie for sixth, Harry Oddy (+19) who tied for ninth, and Brandon McCarty who placed 11th.

Iowa Central placed three of the top five finishers with Tomas Ribeiro (+6) leading the way. Erickson (+9) finished in fourth, one stroke ahead of Justin Schipper (+10).

DMACC will join Kirkwood and Iowa Central at the NJCAA National Championships with their third place team finish. The Bears separated themselves after leading Northeast by seven stokes after Day 1, and ended 25 shots ahead of fourth place Hawkeye by the event's end. Sophomore Dylan Ellis (+13) paced DMACC with a sixth place finish.  

Joining the three teams at Nationals will be Northeast's Ty Heimes (+19) and Hawkeye's Austin Reynolds (+25). Region XI qualifies the top three teams (DMACC, Iowa Central & Kirkwood) along with the next two individuals. Heimes finished in a tie for ninth, while Reynolds edged his teammate Ethan Streicher (+26), for 13th place, for the last qualifying spot.
