2023-24 ICCAC Division II Men's Basketball All-Region Teams Announced
The Division II Men's Basketball All-Region teams were released to the public on Friday, awarding the best players from the ICCAC from the 2023-24 season.
Eight players made up the First Team members -- with 24 total players making it between First, Second, and Honorable Mention teams.
Angelo Winkel headlined the First Team selections as he was announced as the ICCAC Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year. A DMACC forward from Algona, Iowa, Winkel led his team to a 16-2 conference record and earned the one seed in the conference tournament while averaging 17.4 points in conference play.
The sophomore totaled nine double-doubles throughout the season and only scored single digits twice. Winkel was first in the conference in field goal percentage at 64.2% and placed inside the top five in field goals attempted (187), total rebounds (134), blocks (23), and points per game (17.4).
Winkel was the only returning First Team All-Region player from last year's award. He is the third DMACC player to win Player of the Year in the last four seasons, joining Jadan Graves (21-22) and Willie Guy (20-21).
Joining Winkel on the First Team was his teammate, Trey Lewis. The guard from Johnston, Iowa, averaged 13.7 points in conference and was second in assists at 4.9. Lewis also averaged 1.4 steals and 4.3 rebounds in the 16 conference games he played in.
From the Region 11 Champion Ellsworth Panthers were Mobi Ikegwuruka and Clinton Efinda. The first teamers represent Ellsworth who finished 14-4 in conference action.
Ikegwuruka finished second in scoring, averaging 19.3 points, just 0.2 points away from trying Kai Evans of Iowa Lakes. He also led the ICCAC in defensive rebounds at 7.7 and rebounds per game at 9.8.
Efinda, who was named the Region 11 Tournament MVP, scored 20+ points in seven of his conference games and attempted the most free throws in the conference, 98.
Both Ikegwuruka and Efinda both started 12 games against conference opponents and each shot over 48% from the field.
Two pairs of teammates in Sam West and Evans of Iowa Lakes along with Traijan Sain and Ayouba Berthe of Kirkwood wrapped up the First Team.
Evans led the conference in scoring with 19.5 points a game. He also ranked first in offensive rebounds (55) and finished seventh in field goal percentage, at 53%.
His Laker teammate, West finished eighth in scoring at 15 points on average while starting all 17 conference games he appeared in. West was a monster on the glass all season, ranking inside the top in offensive, defensive, and total rebounds per game.
Kirkwood's Sain joined the First Team alongside his running mate, Berthe.
Sain shot 43.3% from the field, 36.4% from three, and 71.4% from the free throw line during conference games. While averaging 11.1 points per game, Sain scored his season high 27 points against Iowa Lakes on March 3 in the Region 11 Semifinals, while shooting 52.9% from the field.
Berthe tied for 10th in ICCAC in scoring with 14.6 points in 18 games. The Eagles forward also ranked eighth in defensive rebounds (95) and ninth in total rebounds (123). While on 62 attempts, Berthe shot 45.2% from deep which was the fifth best in the conference. Last season, he earned a Honorable Mention All-Region selection and is one of four returning All-Region performers this season.
The 2023-4 ICCAC Division II Coach of the Year award was awarded to DMACC's Blake Sandquist. In his second year as the head coach of the Bears, he coached them to a regular season title and a one seed in the conference tournament.
DMACC held a top 10 ranking the entire season, and reached as high as No. 3. If the Bears are rewarded with an at-large bid to the national tournament, it will be their fourth qualification in the last five seasons. DMACC won the national title in 2020-21.
Sandquist has a 52-12 record to date, and a conference record of 27-7.
