Iowa Edges Missouri 5-3 in 2023 Challenge

OTTUMWA, Iowa - Iowa picked up five wins to retain the traveling trophy of the Iowa-Missouri Challenge this season. 

Of the four games on Day 1, Iowa and Missouri split the series 2-2. Triton, of River Grove, Ill. who participate as honorary Iowans during the event, joining in 2021 after Iowa Western's transition to Division II. The Trojans opened up the event with a convincing win over Three Rivers before Missori took the next two. 

State Fair picked up a 67-66 dub over Marshalltown in the closest game of the tournament. No. 20 Moberly Area then picked up a huge win over No. 12 Southeastern, handing the Blackhawks their first ever loss at the Challenge. 
 
The host Indian Hills wrapped up the day with a win over Missouri-West Plains. 

Missouri took the lead on Day 2 as Three Rivers powered past Marshalltown 79-70. The Tigers all-time record at the event is 1-7 after an 0-2 2023. 
 
From there, Triton, Southeastern and Indian Hills rattled off three-straight wins over Missouri-West Plains, State Fair and Moberly Area to capture the Challenge Trophy for the fourth-straight season. 
 
Overall, Iowa leads the Challenge series 21-11.
 
Amar Aguillard of Triton headlined the event from a production standpoint. The guard scored 32 points in back-to-back games, setting the scoring record for an Iowa-Missouri Challenge weekend at 64. He was three points shy of Tyon Grant-Foster's single game high of 35. Aguillard hit seven threes against Three Rivers, an event high in that category, and set a Challenge record with 13 field goals made against Missouri-West Plains. Only Eddiean Tirado has made more when the former Indian Hills Warrior knocked down nine threes against Moberly Area in 2021. 
 
Joe Scott of Marshalltown had 13 rebounds against Three Rivers to lead that category -- while Dylan Williams of Triton had the single game high in assists with seven. 

Triton's AJ Dixon and Moberly's Tekao Carpenter were one steal shy of tying the steals record with four in a single game.
