2024 All-Region | ICCAC Sports Shooting
The ICCAC announced the All-Region and Special Awards on Monday after the completion of the 2024 season. Award winners were based on their statistics throughout the season, outlined at the bottom of the release.
The 2024 ICCAC Shooters of the Year both came from Hawkeye in Chase Bindl and Brenna Leitner after topping the High Over All list.
Bindl was outstanding all year in all disciplines. He was the ICCAC's No. 1 shooter in Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. In Trap -- he boasted three perfect 100 scores throughout the year in shoots against Northeast Iowa, Indian Hills and Kirkwood. He posted a 98 in the Skeet triangular and a 93 in Sporting Clays. He hit 27 more targets than the next closest shooter in the High Over All standings -- totaling 781 of 800 targets calculated in the scoring.
Leitner was the top female shooter this year, edging out teammate Lydia Covert by one target. The freshman was First Team All-Region in all disciplines and led all Trap shooters in 2024. Her best trap total was a 99 of 100 against Kirkwood on Oct. 12.
In Skeet she hit the second-most targets of qualified shooters and fifth-most in Sporting Clays. In all she hit 711 of the 800 targets scored in the High Over All rankings.
On the Men's side, the other First Team All-Region performers in Trap were Hawkeye's Cole Slabaugh, Southeastern's Abram Lorence, Indian Hills' Aidan Eischen and Iowa Western's Michael Day and Mason Pillard.
Lorence (394) finished second behind Bindl (397) by just three targets. Slabaugh was third on the list at 390. Day, Eischen and Pillard all earned First-Team tied with 389 targets.
There were no repeat First Teamers this season. Lorence was a Second Team shooter in 2023 and moved up. The only other Trap All-Region shooters were Northeast Iowa's Tristan Lewison (Second Team), Iowa Central's Jacob Geis (Honorable Mention) and Hawkeye's Colton Crooks (Honorable Mention).
For the Women, Janice Tejeda of Iowa Western and Ashley Fischer of Northeast Iowa returned to the First Team -- the only two to do so.
Lydia Covert moved up the list from a Second Team designation in 2023 to First Team in 2024.
Rounding out the female First Teamers was Hawkeye's Gabby Wright.
Notably, there were two other returning All-Region performers from last year in Iowa Central's Keeley Waack, who was Second Team in 2023 and Honorable Mention in 2024, and Indian Hills Hayle Byrge who went the other direction from Honorable Mention to Second Team.
The 2024 ICCAC Sports Shooting Coach of the Year went to Indian Hills' Jake Stalzer. The Warriors head coach led the Warriors to a strong season going 3-1 in Trap duals and making the semifinals in the Clay Target Craziness before falling to eventual champion Iowa Western.
At the ICCAC Championships in Waukee, the Warriors took third place in Trap.
Individually, 27 Warrior shooters earned All-Region designation in men's (20) and women's (7) -- an increase of eight after 19 qualifiers in 2023.
