Match of the Week: Northeast def. Western Iowa Tech, 3-2

Northeast escaped with a five set win over Western Iowa Tech to secure the No. 3 seed in the Region 11 Tournament.

The Hawks dominated the first set with a 25-12 score to make it 1-0, the Comets challenged Northeast in the second set but fell short and the Hawks took a 2-0 advantage. Not willing to lay down and accept defeat, the Comets won a thrilling third set that finished 31-29, making the overall 2-1. Then in another tight set the Comets brought the score back to level at 2-2 with a 25-22 win in set four. As was most of the match, set five did not disappoint as the Comets and Hawks went back and forth, fortunately for the Hawks the ball fell their way on the day and they escaped at home with a 15-12 set five victory to take the match 3-2.

Leading the way for Northeast was Shaylyn Safranek with four kills, 17 digs, 59 assists, five aces and five blocks. Mya Hedstrom led the Hawks in kills with 20, while Daveigh Munter-McAfee, Avery Couch and Kaidence Wilson all had 10 kills of their own. The Hawks had a thrilling day on defense with five hitting at least 10 digs in the match. Leading the team for the match in digs was Jayden Bestenlehner and Alex Arenas both with 21. Behind them was Saferanek with 17, Hedstrom with 15 and Katy Jones with 10.

Next up for the Hawks is playing No. 6 seeded Ellsworth in the first round of the Region 11 Tournament, they will play in Norfolk on Nov. 6 at 6:00PM. Western Iowa Tech's next match will also be in the Region 11 Tournament, but they will travel to No. 2 seeded Iowa Central in Fort Dodge on Nov. 6; the game will start at 7:00PM.
