The Dig: ICCAC Volleyball Week 5 Recaps

Division I Conference Matches

#8 Iowa Western (14-5; 2-0) def. #7 Indian Hills (18-3; 1-1) 

Wednesday night featured one of the most highly anticipated matchups in the ICCAC this season. No. 7 Indian Hills faced off against No. 8 Iowa Western in a top-10 matchup, and a chance to take a mid-season stronghold on the Division I Conference Championship. 

In the end, Iowa Western prevailed, 3-0, in a tightly contested match. The Reivers won the first two sets by just two points each, 26-24 and 25-23, before taking the third set by the largest margin, 25-20. 

Iowa Western was led by Kortyln Henderson who had 14 kills, followed by Kelsey Havel with 11 and Genesis Sheridan with 10. Reka Kotoman had 37 assists for Iowa Western and Bryn Stansberry led the team in digs with 10. 

Warrior hitter Mariana Rodrigues led all scorers with 15 kills, and Gabriela Cavalcante and Ana Nunes had six apiece. Cassia Lemos led the team with 35 assists and Lemos along with Amanda Toyota had 11 digs. 

Division I takes a week off before starting conference play back up again on Oct. 16 when Marshalltown and Iowa Western face off.

Division II Conference Matches

RV NIACC (17-5; 4-1) def. #14 Kirkwood (17-8; 2-3), 3-1

The NIACC volleyball team improved to 4-1 in the ICCAC with a 3-1 win over No. 14 Kirkwood Wednesday night in the NIACC gym.

NIACC won the sets 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23.

Trojan sophomore Kennedy Meister had 11 kills, seven serving aces, and 20 digs. 

Also for the Lady Trojans, freshman Becca Steffen had nine kills, 21 assists, and seven digs, Shelby Heston had six kills 14 digs and two blocks, Bri Powers had 14 digs, Tessa Sienknecht had 3 kills, seven assists, and eight digs, Megan Hollander had five kills, Alexa Loftus had four kills and nine digs and Braylee Wood had two kills and four blocks.

For Kirkwood, Abbie Ericson had 12 kills and Anna Gorsich had 10. Madi Wagaman had 26 assists for the Eagles and four players had double-digit digs, with 33 coming from Maranda Wheelock

NIACC hosts Northeast on Oct. 9 and Kirkwood will host Iowa Central.

DMACC (11-11; 3-2) def. Iowa Lakes (4-18; 1-4), 3-0

DMACC settled in for their second straight conference win with a 3-0 win over Iowa Lakes. 

The Bears dominated each set, winning 25-7, 25-17 and 25-10 before it was all said and done. DMACC held the Lakers to just 8 total kills on the night. With the win, DMACC is back above .500 in conference play heading into next week's match at Southeastern. 

Iowa Lakes drops to 1-4 in the conference, but still holds a one-game lead on the 8th seed of the Region XI Tournament. Next week, the Lakers play at Hawkeye.

#11 Iowa Central (22-2; 5-0) def. Southwestern (3-20; 0-5), 3-0

The Tritons kept their conference streak of 14-straight wins rolling last night, winning 3-0 over Southwestern on Wednesday night. 

Still not having lost a set yet in conference play (15-0), Iowa Central won 25-8, 25-18, 25-16 in the three against the Spartans. Amaya Finley led all hitters with 14 kills in a game where 16 Triton players saw the floor. Alesha Johnson had 25 assists and 13 digs, and Taylor Bienemann also had 13 digs. 

Iowa Central is now 22-2 and looks to climb into the NJCAA Division II top 10 rankings. They will head to Kirkwood next week. 

Southwestern, still in search of their first conference win, hosts Ellsworth next Wednesday, who is also in search of a conference win.

Southeastern (13-9; 3-2) def. Ellsworth (3-18; 0-5), 3-1

Southeastern took down Ellsworth on Wednesday night, 3-1, to help the Blackhawks remain in the top half the ICCAC Division II Volleyball standings. 

Again, the Rachels led SCC in scoring, with Rachel Malinowski notching 13 kills and Rachel Bingham finishing with 11. Both had double-doubles with 14 and 11 digs respectively. Melodee Schultee had 22 digs, the most for any Blackhawk. Jenna Saad led the team with 32 assists. 

Set scores finished 25-12, 16-25, 25-15, and 25-21. The Panthers set win was their second in as many weeks in conference play. Ellsworth has a big opportunity to get their first win next week as they face off against Southwestern in Creston. Both are 0-5 in conference play. 

Southeastern and DMACC will face off in Burlington next week with outright fourth place on the line, pending NIACC's result against Northeast.

Northeast (12-9; 5-0) def. Hawkeye (11-11; 2-3), 3-1

The Northeast Hawks continue to win in conference play after 3-1 win over Hawkeye, who featured an interim head coach Tyann Caspers, on Wednesday night. Set scores were: 25-27, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-15.

Brianna Bauer led the Hawks' offense with 16 kills to finish the night with a .270 hitting percentage. Sophomores Hannah Heppner and Elley Beaver had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Beaver also added 12 digs and two blocks, while Heppner had two blocks.

Josie Sanger notched 22 digs and Jamie Bonifas recorded 47 assists and 11 digs.

The Hawks are undefeated (5-0) and will host NIACC next week. Hawkeye hosts Iowa Lakes in Waterloo.
