The Dig: ICCAC Volleyball Week 4 Recaps

Division I Conference Matches

#12 Indian Hills (17-2; 1-0) def. Marshalltown (17-7; 0-2), 3-0

Indian Hills got the better of Marshalltown in their first meeting of the season last night, winning 3-0. 

Warrior setter Cassisa Lemos had 45 assists and 17 digs on the night. Most of her passes went to Mariana Rodrigues and Iva Vranic who had 23 kills on 45 attacks. Amanda Toyota had 13 digs as well for the Indian Hills defense.

A big match-up next week as the Warriors travel to Iowa Western to face the Reivers. The last time Indian Hills beat Iowa Western was back on Oct. 11, 2016, when they won 3-2 at home. 

Marshalltown will wait three weeks before facing Iowa Western again on Oct. 16.

Division II Conference Matches

Northeast (11-8; 4-0) def. #13 Kirkwood (13-7; 2-2), 3-1

The match of the night on Wednesday featured Kirkwood and Northeast; the No. 13 team in the country versus one of two undefeateds in the conference. After dropping the first set 25-22, the undefeated Northeast Hawks seized control of the match. They edge Kirkwood in set two, 26-24 to even the match up, and from there outscored the Eagles 50-31 in the final two sets to win their fourth ICCAC match of the season. For Northeast, Brianna Bauer recorded 18 kills on 42 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Caitlin Orton added 10 kills, while Jamie Bonifas added 48 assists and 14 digs. Josie Sanger notched 30 digs at the libero position.

For Kirkwood, they were led by a trio of killers, Aubrin Dittmer who had 14, Abbie Ericson who had 11 and Taylor Carey who had 10. Madie Wagaman had 42 kills on the night and three players had 20 or more digs; Dittmer (22), Anna Gorisch (23), and Maranda Wheelock (20). 

Northeast will host Hawkeye next Wednesday. Kirkwood hopes to stay above .500 in Mason City against NIACC.

DMACC (8-9; 2-2) def. Southwestern (3-16; 0-4), 3-0

DMACC finished a clean sweep of Southwestern on Wednesday night to even their record at 2-2. The Bears took three sets 25-23, 25-19 and 25-14. 

Southwestern dropped another conference match, and with that, are still in search of their first conference win this season. Paige Oldenkamp and Taylor Buxton led the Spartans with six kills each. Kelcie Gaines had 17 digs and Brooklyn Herr had 19 assists and 11 digs. 

DMACC will look to begin a conference winning streak against Iowa Lakes next week. SWCC hosts Kirkwood.

RV NIACC (15-5; 3-1) def. Southeastern (10-8; 2-2), 3-0

In another great match up last night, NIACC and Southeastern faced off in a battle of 2-1s. NIACC won in straight sets by the time it was all said and done. The Trojans won 25-21, 25-14 and 25-19. 

The telltale stat of the night was although the Blackhawk hitters had more kills than NIACC, 29-25, they committed 20 more errors than the Trojans, 29-9, giving NIACC points. 

Kennedy Meister led NIACC with 9 kills. Rachel Malinowski led Southeastern with 11. Defensively, Southeastern had three players in double-figure digs, Melodee Schulte (20), Kennedy Good (13) and Malinoski (16).

For NIACC, Becca Seffen had 15 digs and 14 assists to lead the team in both categories. Jenna Saad had 25 assists for SCC. 

NIACC has a chance to establish themselves in the upper echelon and keep pace with Iowa Central and Northeast next week, facing Kirkwood at home. Southeastern will look to bounce back against Ellsworth.

#12 Iowa Central (18-1; 4-0) def. Iowa Lakes (4-17; 1-3), 3-0

Iowa Central continued their dominance against ICCAC competition this season. The Tritons swept thru Iowa Lakes on Wednesday with set scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 26-24. 

It was the Tritons 13th straight regular-season conference victory and 18th straight win this season. Even more impressive, they haven't dropped a set yet, 12-0 in ICCAC play in 2019. 

Amaya Finley and Kealy Anderson led the team in kills with 13 and 11. Both had double-doubles each recording 13 digs as well. Taylor Bienemann had 15 digs as well. 

Alesha Johnson paced the offense with 21 assists and Katie Godfredsen had 13. Faith Marroquin provided four aces. 

For Iowa Lakes, the Lakers Ariel Bozonie had a team-high nine kills. Mary Kelly and Lindsey Jensen had 10 digs each. Jada Barker had 20 assists. 

Iowa Central invites Southwestern to town next Wednesday. Iowa Lakes will head to DMACC.

Hawkeye (10-10; 2-2) def. Ellsworth (2-15; 0-4), 3-1

After dropping the first set, Hawkeye bounced back to beat Ellsworth in Waterloo, 3-1. The RedTails stalled the Panthers after a 25-22 first set defeat, taking the next three handily, 25-13, 25-16, 25-14. 

For Ellsworth, the 25-22 set win was their first of the season. Granted, they faced three of the leagues best teams in the first three weeks (Iowa Central, Kirkwood and Northeast). 

Hawkeye heads to Northeast next week. Ellsworth will host Southeastern.
