The Dig: ICCAC Volleyball Week 3 Recaps

Division I Conference Matches

#17 Iowa Western (8-5; 1-0) def. Marshalltown (15-5; 0-1), 3-0

In the first ICCAC Division I Volleyball match of the season, Iowa Western handled Marshalltown, 3-0 in straight sets. The Tigers, after falling in the first set 25-15, competed their best in the second set but came up short 25-21. It was all Reivers in the final set, 25-6. 

Iowa Western was led by Kelsey Havel who had 12 kills, and Kortlyn Henderson who had eight kills. 

Réka Kotomán had 32 assists and 11 digs as well for Iowa Western. 

The next match will be Wednesday, Sept. 25 when Indian Hills faces Marshalltown. Iowa Western will face Indian Hills in Ottumwa the following Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Division II Conference Matches

# 8 Kirkwood (12-5; 2-1) def. DMACC (5-7; 1-2), 3-1

Kirkwood dropped the first set 25-17 before flipping the tide on DMACC to win the next three sets and the match on Wednesday. The Eagles were paced by  Aubrin Dittmer who finished with 11 kills. Anna Gorsich had 10 kills and 23 digs. Madi Wagaman collected 35 assists. Maranda Wheelock had 25 digs, Wagaman 18 digs and Olivia Richards 14. 

For DMACC, Amber Dilsaver blasted 20 more kills for the Bears, now tallying 57 in three conference matches, second in the league behind SCC's Rachel Bingham (62). 

Dakota Miles led DMACC with 27 digs and setter Cailey Schaa had 39 assists. She leads all setters with 112 assists in three conference matches.

DMACC looks to right the ship and get back to .500 against Southwestern next week while Kirkwood hosts 3-0 Northeast.

#12 Iowa Central (17-1; 3-0) def. Hawkeye (6-8; 1-2), 3-0

The Iowa Central Tritons continued two streaks on Wednesday night, extending their regular-season conference winning streak to 12 games, and extending their 2019 season winning streak to 15. In straight sets, Iowa Central put down Hawkeye 25-15, 25-18, 25-15. They were paced by Amaya Finley who notched 19 points on 17 kills and two blocks. She also had 19 digs. Alesha Johnson assisted Triton hitters 39 times while collecting 11 digs. Kealey Anderson had 10 kills. 

Hawkeye was led by Paige Eiffler with eigth kills. Haylee Keune and Tanyon Schutjer each had double-digit digs. Schutjer led the RedTails with 17 assists.

Iowa Central will head to Iowa Lakes next week. Hawkeye hosts Ellsworth.

Northeast (8-6; 3-0) def. Ellsworth (1-13; 0-3), 3-0

The Hawks took care of the Ellsworth Panthers with ease, sweeping them in straight sets on Wednesday night. Northeast's defense looked solid only allowing the Panthers to score seven points in the first set, 13 in the second set, and 11 in the final set.

Northeast shared the wealth in kills with Elley Beaver leading the way with six. Out of 48 digs, three players accounted for 29 of them. Caitlin Kumm tallied six digs, Jamie Bonifas followed with 10, and finally, the leader with 13 was freshman Josie Sanger.

Ellsworth's struggles continue bringing their record to 1-13 looking to flip the script at the Southeastern tournament against Lake Land College and Graceland JV. On the other hand, Northeast looks to keep their respective two-match streak alive in the Kansas City Kansas Tournament this coming weekend, Sept. 20-21.

In ICCAC action next week, Northeast takes their unblemished record to Cedar Rapids to face Kirkwood, while Ellsworth heads up the road to Waterloo to face Hawkeye.

Southeastern (8-7; 2-1) def. Iowa Lakes (2-16; 1-2), 3-0

Southeastern improved their conference record to one match above .500 at 2-1. They dominated the Lakers in straight sets, with Kennedy Good collecting 10 kills throughout the games. Good led her squad in points with 11.5 with teammate Rachel Bingham right behind her with 10 points. Melodee Schulte did the dirty work with 19 digs in total leading the team Wednesday. 

After a two-match skid, the Blackhawks picked up a momentum-swinging win and look to bring that same energy to Highland and Lake Land College who the play in the Jimmy John's Invite this Saturday, Sept. 21.

As for conference play, SCC will host a ranked NIACC squad with Iowa Lakes inviting top-dog Iowa Central to Estherville.

#19 NIACC (14-4; 2-1) def. Southwestern (3-13; 0-3), 3-0

No. 19 NIACC went into Creston and swept Southwestern with match scores of 25-10, 25-22, and 25-14.

NIACC (14-4 overall; 2-1 ICCAC), was led by Becca Steffen, who had 18 assists, 13 digs, and 6 kills. Kennedy Meister also added 11 kills, 5 digs, and 2 blocks. Southwestern was led by Cayla Maitlen, who had 10 kills. 

Still in search of their first conference win, SWCC hosts DMACC while NIACC travels to Burlington to face Southeastern.
