No. 11 Northeast topples rival in home opener

NORFOLK, Neb. – The No. 11 Northeast Community College volleyball team hit the ground running on Wednesday night, defeating Highway 81-rival, Central Community College at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

Set scores were: 27-25, 25-16 and 25-18.

After a back-and-forth affair in the first set, the Hawks (2-3) went to work in the final two sets to hold off the visitors from mounting any comeback.

Freshman Brianna Bauer (O'Neill, Neb.) led the Northeast attack with 13 kills. Caitlin Orton (Mills, Neb.) added 11, while Elley Beaver (Columbus, Neb.) had 19 digs and seven kills.

Caitlin Kumm (Osmond, Neb.) pitched in 18 digs and Josie Sanger (Crofton, Neb.) had 17. MaKayla Davidson (Alliance, Neb.) added 32 assists.

The Hawks return to action on Friday as they host the Northeast Tournament, taking on Lake Region State College at 1 p.m. and Fort Scott Community College at 7 p.m. Northeast will turn around and play on Saturday against Williston State College at 11 a.m. and North Dakota State College of Science at 5 p.m. at the Cox Activities Center.
