The Dig: ICCAC Volleyball Week 3 Recaps

Division I Conference Matches

2 Iowa Western (11-1; 2-0) def. Marshalltown (9-2; 0-1), 3-0

Iowa Western picked up their second conference win of the season. The Reivers were led by Irina Alekseeva with 12 kills, followed by Kortlyn Henderson who had 10. Hina Pua'a and Ariana Macies were also a major part in the success for the Reivers. Pua'a had 32 assists and Macies had 19 digs. 

Marshalltown's two key players were Halee Pedro and Chiara Mottola. Pedro led the team with 15 digs, while Mottola had a total of 8 kills. 

Iowa Western stayed strong throughout the entire game. The Reivers won all three sets 25-19, 25-13 and 25-15.

Marshalltown will host Iowa Valley sister school, Ellsworth, next Thursday, while Iowa Western looks to continue their winning streak, now six stright, at Central (Neb.) Community College.

Division II Conference Matches

16 Iowa Central (10-4; 3-0) def. #11 Hawkeye (11-2; 2-1), 3-2

Hawkeye suffered their first conference loss to Iowa Central on Wednesday night. However, the RedTails did not make it easy for Iowa Central. The Red Tails fought hard to win second set 25-21 and avoid dropping down 2-0. In fact, Hawkeye rallied and took the third set 26-24.

But, Iowa Central's ultimately resilient night was accomplished with the help of the entire team. The Tritons won the fourth set 25-20 and finished the fifth set 15-9. In all, the team had a total of 71 kills, 140 digs, and 62 assists. Amaya Finley led the Tritons with 27 kills. Kryssie Okinaka led with 37 digs, followed by Abby Lohrmann and Hannah Murray at 22 and Amaya Finley at 21 digs. 

One key player from Hawkeye is outside hitter, Megan Hudson, as expected. Hudson led the team with 17 kills and had 10 digs. Another RedTails who had a nice night was Maggie Driscol who had 32 assists. 

Iowa Central will go on to play at Bismarck State College. Hawkeye will be tested again, facing 16th-ranked ICCAC Division I opponent, Indian Hills.

#17 Northeast (8-3; 3-0) def. #12 DMACC (8-2; 1-2), 3-0

Northeast defeated #12 DMACC on Wednesday night in another ranked ICCAC intraconference battle. Gabriela Barbosa was a strong influence on the 3-0 outcome for the Hawks court totaling 28 digs. Hannah Heppner led the team with 12 kills, followed by Kalli Brester who had nine kills. Savannah Nelson dished out 32 assists. 

In a tough night for the Bears, no player reached double-digit kills, but Peyton Parker came the closest with eight. Madison Paulsen and Daiton Martin did have double-digit digs with 13 and 11, defensively. Gillian Tupper led all Bears with 15 assists.

Northeast won all three sets; 25-23, 25-17, and 25-15. 

DMACC will look for a conference win against next against NIACC, while Northeast will take on Southwestern.

13 Kirkwood (13-3; 2-1) def. Southwestern (3-11; 0-3), 3-0

Kirkwood won all three sets during their home match against Southwestern. Alexa Ingram and Maddie Lavenz shined during the game on Wednesday night. Ingram led the team with 10 kills, while Lavenz had a total of 18 digs. 

Southwestern's focal point was through Lyann Mena Rodriguez. Rodriguez picked up 17 digs, countering the Eagles attack. 

In the end, Kirkwood overwhelmed the Spartans won 25-17, 25-17 and 25-10. The win put the 13th-ranked Eagles at 2-1 in conference play and Southwestern fell to 0-3. 

Kirkwood's will head to West Burlington to play Southeastern next week while Southwestern will host 3-0 Northeast.

Southeastern (9-6; 2-1) def. RV NIACC (10-5; 1-2), 3-2

Southeastern picks up their second conference win against NIACC on Wednesday night. NIACC put up a fight, taking the first set 25-16 and the third set 26-24. The BlackHawks won the second set 25-23, the fourth set 25-20 and the final set 15-13. 

Although NIACC took a loss, a few key players shined during the game. Kennedy Meister led the team with 25 kills and Connor Gauch had a total of 31 digs. 

No stats were available at the time of release for Southeastern. 

The BlackHawks will head to Southwestern for their game next Wednesday, while NIACC will head to Boone for their game against DMACC.

Iowa Lakes (7-12; 1-2) def. Ellsworth (0-13; 0-3), 3-1

Iowa Lakes won their first conference game of the season against Ellsworth on Wednesday night. Ellsworth took the first set 25-22 but Iowa Lakes won the next three sets 25-18, 25-10 and 27-25 to seal their first conference win of the season. 

No stats were available at the time of release. 

Iowa Lakes faces off against Hawkeye next week, while Ellsworth will host the undefeated Iowa Central Tritons.
