The Dig: ICCAC Volleyball Week 2 Recaps

Division I Conference Matches

2 Iowa Western (9-1; 1-0) def. #16 Indian Hills (8-3; 0-1), 3-0

Iowa Western shined during their first conference game against 16th-ranked Indian Hills. The No. 2 Reivers won in straight sets in Council Bluffs on Wednesday night. Setter Hina Pua'a helped paced the sweep by contributing 39 assists while Ariana Macies led the team with 12 digs and Irina Alekseeva led with 15 kills. Indian Hills fought hard to force a fourth set, coming close but falling short 25-22. 

Iowa Western controlled the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-20. The win was the fourth time out of 10 matches this season that the Reivers have topped a ranked opponent.

The Warriors were led by Mariana Rodrigues who tallied up 11 kills while Cecilia Campocontributeded eight kills.

Iowa Western will head to Marshalltown next Wednesday, Sept. 12 for another conference game. Indian Hills will look to get back on the winning track in their next game against Hawkeye, a rising Division II program currently in their first competitive season in the ICCAC.

Division II Conference Matches

#19 Hawkeye (10-1; 2-0) def. #5 DMACC (6-1; 1-1), 3-1

Hawkeye surprised the league on Wednesday night as they hosted the 5th ranked DMACC Bears in their first ever home conference match. The RedTails only gave up one set on their way to a 3-1 victory. The stats show that a bevy of players contributed to the success Hawkeye saw on Wednesday night. Haylee Kuene led the team with 24 digs, while star hitter Megan Hudson had 24 digs and an astounding 27 kills. Hudson leads all of ICCAC Division II volleyball with 172 kills and her setter, Maggie Driscol leads the league in assists with 384. 

DMACC fought hard by coming back to win the third set 25-23 after the RedTails won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17 before ultimately shutting down DMACC in the fourth set, 25-18. 

Just as a week ago, Madison Paulsen and Amber Dilsaver were the leaders in kills for the Bears accounting for 22 combined. Paulsen finished with a double-double by adding 19 digs to her 10 kills. Guillian Tupper has 28 assists and Cailey Schaa had 23. 

Hawkeye now sits at the top of the standings in a three-way tie with Iowa Central and Northeast while DMACC drops to 1-1. 

Next week Hawkeye travels to Iowa Central in a huge first place battle while DMACC goes to Northeast to face the Hawks.

#11 Iowa Central (8-3; 2-0) def. Southwestern (1-10; 0-2), 3-0

Iowa Central won all three sets in the match against Southwestern. Kryssie Okinaka was a strong influence on the court totaling 25 digs on the night for the Tritons. Amaya Finley was also a major part in the success with 14 kills. Libby Zorn also scored double-digit kills contributing 11. 

On the Spartan side, it was a tough night offensively as the team only totaled 20 kills to Iowa Centrals 39. Jada Perkins was the leader for Southwestern with 8. Lyann Mena Rodriguez picked up 19 digs defensively.

In the end, the Tritons won 25-21, 25-15, 25-20. 

Iowa Central hosts Hawkeye in a battle of the unbeaten while Southwestern head to Cedar Rapids to take on the ever-formidable Kirkwood Eagles in Week 3.

#12 Kirkwood (9-2; 1-1) def. NIACC (6-4; 1-1), 3-0 

Kirkwood shined in their second conference match against NIACC to rebound from their Week 1 loss to DMACC. Kirkwood swept through three sets 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20. The Eagles thrived offensively and ended the game with a total of 52 kills. Alexa Ingram lead the team with 14 kills, followed by Abbi Tunis who had 13 kills. Lauren Keane was another key player for the Eagles. Keane had 41 assists on Wednesday night and now has 381 assists on the year, second most in the ICCAC. 

Hannah Wagner was the lone bright spot on offense notching a double-double for the Trojans, 11 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Groe and Sydney Roush both had 10 assists a piece.

The Eagles will host Southwestern a week from now. NIACC hosts Southeastern.

RV Northeast (6-3; 2-0) def. Iowa Lakes (4-9; 0-2), 3-1

Northeast took care of business against Iowa Lakes after falling out of the rankings this week. Despite that, the Hawks prevailed winning close sets 25-21 and 25-20 before slipping a bit in the third. The Lakers battled to a 25-22 set victory to extend the match to a fourth set. Northeast collected themselves and handled the fourth set with ease, running away 25-14. 

Iowa Lakes was led by Keyeria Tyeskie who had 11 kills. The Lakers were flying all over on defense as well, with three players notching double-digit digs. Faith Marroquin had 26 herself. 

No statistics were available at the time of release for Northeast. 

The Hawks, also tied for first place in the conference, will host 5th-ranked DMACC, who will be hungry after dropping their match with Hawkeye. Iowa Lakes hopes to get their first conference win when they host Ellsworth next Wednesday.

Southeastern (6-6; 1-1) def. Ellsworth (0-7; 0-2), 3-1 

The Blackhawks picked up their first conference win on Wednesday night over Ellsworth, but not without a fight from the Panthers. The teams split the first two sets, both winning 25-19, respectively. But Southeastern ultimately overwhelmed Ellsworth winning 50 points to the Panthers 36 finishing off the final two sets and the match. 

No stats were available at the time of release. 

Ellsworth will head to Estherville as both teams will look to pick up their first conference win. Southeastern heads north to Mason City to face the Trojans; both teams are 1-1.
