RedTails Open Regular Season With Wins Over DCTC

WATERLOO- The Hawkeye RedTails men's and women's soccer teams started the regular season off on the right foot with two wins over Region XI opponent, Dakota County Technical College (DCTC). Even though both teams belong to Region XI, the contest on August 27 won't count toward their conference record with the new ICCAC by-laws instated for the 2017-2018 season. Rather, the teams matchup on October 11 will count toward conference standings.

The women kicked off first with a 3:00 pm start at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. The scoring got started early on with an unassisted goal by DCTC's Sydney Flannery in the first two minutes of the game. The RedTails quickly rid themselves of their home opener nerves, and settled in quickly after with an answering goal from Jovanna Suarez on an assist from Ruth Boland in the 3rd minute to tie the game. It was all RedTails from there on out, and most notably the Houston, TX native, Jovanna Suarez, who racked up six goals on the night with four in the first half and two in the second half. Ruth BolandAllison KeitelBrittany Honkomp, and Kristi Mensen also contributed goals of their own helping the lady RedTails roll to an 11-3 win in their first regular season game of the year.

The men kept that momentum rolling with their 5:00 pm start. The RedTails struck early on with a goal from Lamane Seck in the 7th minute on an assist from Karl Mbouombouo. The Paris, France native, Karl Mbouombouo, then put two of his own goals on the board in the 28th and 56th minute both on assists from Leonardo Braga. The RedTail men held the shut out until the 73rd minute when DCTC's Hser Baw snuck one in on an assist from Eduardo Cardenas. The RedTail men went on to defeat DCTC 3-1 in their first regular season game of the year.
