Trojan wrestling places ninth at Simpson Invitational

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Jameel Bryant (So., St. Petersburg, FL) placed fifth in the 174 class, while Basil Minto (Fr., Cape Coral, FL) was sixth at 184 to lead NIACC wrestling to ninth place out of 12 teams at the Simpson Invitational.

NIACC was the only two-year school at the meet. Minto, Bryant, and Andres Torres (Fr., Windsor, CA) at 125 were the only Trojans who made it to the quarterfinals in the championship bracket.

Bryant received a bye in the opening round, and then pinned David Carter of Northwestern in the quarterfinals. After losing closely to Coe College's Scott King 3-2 in the semis, Central Missouri's Willie Russell topped Bryant 6-4 in the semifinals of consolation bracket. Bryant won the fifth place match due to medical forfeit by Carter.

Minto opened the 184 tournament with a bye in the first round, and then had back-to-back pins of Lonnie Flint of William Penn and Maxwell Muench of Truman State in the second and quarterfinal rounds. Minto then lost the next three matches, losing to Wartburg's Dylan Azinger 13-3 in the semifinals, 4-3 to Coe's Ryan Sheldon in the consolation semifinals, and then 4-3 to Weston Keleher of Missouri Baptist in the fifth-place match.

Coe won the event with 215.5 points, beating Wartburg College by one point. Grand View was third at 158. NIACC's 48 points put them in front Missouri Baptist at 47 points, Concordia at 32.5 points, Truman State's 20 points.

The Trojans will host Waldorf on Tuesday for their only home dual of the season. Start time is at 7 p.m. in the NIACC Rec Center.
