2023 National Tournament Recap | Men's Soccer

Division I:

Wichita, Kansas - Tenth-seeded Indian Hills was eliminated from the National Tournament in pool play in a tiebreaker matchup.

The Warriors started the National Tournament off with a narrow 2-1 loss to the No. 3 seed Salt Lake (Utah). Then IHCC rebounded by beating sixth-seeded Barton (Kan.) in double overtime with a score of 2-1. Gustavo Marques scored the game-tying and game winning goals for an epic clutch performance.

Barton was then able to beat Salt Lake 2-1 which left the all three teams tied on points and goal differential in pool play.

To break the tie, two golden goal 20 minute tiebreaker rounds were played between Indian Hills and Barton with the winner playing the highest seeded Salt Lake. Unfortunately for the Warriors they fell on penalty kicks in the first tiebreaker match.

This wrapped up a solid season for the Warriors after winning both the Region 11 Title and District Title before putting on a solid showing at the National Tournament. It was their first appearance since 2017 and just second all-time.

Division II:

Wichita, Kansas - Two ICCAC teams received bids to the 2023 NJCAA National Tournament with District Champion Northeast receiving an automatic bid and Iowa Lakes earning an at-large berth.

The two teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at the end of the season, and ultimately, that is how the season played out.

Northeast was given the No. 1 overall seed of the tournament and breezed through pool play with a 5-1 win over Patrick & Henry (Va.) and a 1-0 shutout of Prairie State (Ill.), the reigning NJCAA Division II Men's Soccer Champions. The Hawks Aleksander Pedersen led the team with two goals in Game 1, while Edouard Nys highlighted the tournament with the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays with a world class back heel volley past the Prairie State keeper.

For Iowa Lakes, the Lakers stifled the competition, outscoring their two teams 10-0 in pool play. They laid into No. 9 seeded Rock Valley (Ill.) 7-0 before dominating Pima (Ariz.) 3-0. Four of the Lakers 10 goals came off the foot of Emilio Cazares. Flynn Faulkner also netted a pair after a goal in each match.

From there, based on seeding, Northeast and Iowa Lakes were paired up in the semifinal match up, the No. 1 seed versus the No. 4 seed after the top four seeds advanced out of pool play.

During the season, Northeast won both matches against Iowa Lakes, taking the regular season contest 2-1 and winning the Region 11 Championship game 6-3. However, Iowa Lakes was able to turn the tables in the NJCAA Semifinals and knock off the top seeded Hawks.

Engenio Perez struck first for the Lakers in the 33rd minute -- and the Lakers held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Not 10 minutes into the second half, Iowa Lakes picked up an insurance goal from none other than Cazares to lead 2-0. Yuta Hirano provided seven saves to block out the Hawks, who managed a goal in the 89th minute. But it was too late, and Iowa Lakes advanced to the NJCAA National Championship.

In the title game, the Lakers squared up against Phoenix (Ariz.). The two teams played out 110 minutes of uneventful (three shots on goal), scoreless soccer that resulted in penalty kicks to decide the 2023 Division II Men's Soccer Champion.

After Iowa Lakes made both of their first two attempts, Phoenix failed on their second attempt, leaving an opening for the Lakers. From there, they powered home their last three shots capped off by a decisive and emphatic kick from Ruadhan Feeney to give Iowa Lakes a 5-3 victory, and first ever national championship.
