NIACC's Fink wins national title

Fink shot rounds of 77-68-72-70 - 287 and finished the four-day tournament 1-under par. Tyler Community College's Charlie Cameron and Mineral Area's Tanner McKinney tied for second at 1-over par.

Fink is the first golfer from an Iowa school since Kirkwood's TJ Redding won the NJCAA Division II title in 2006.

Indian Hills' Adams Collins won the NJCAA Division II title in 2003, Pat Stolpe of Indian Hills won the NJCAA Divison II title in 2001 and Adam Babb of Indian Hills won the NJCAA Division II title in 1998.

Indian Hills' Brad Smith was the NJCAA Division I champion in 2006.

From 1959-89 there was only one division for men's junior college golf and no player from an Iowa school claimed an individual national title.

Fink entered Friday's final round in third place and was three shots behind McKinney, who shot a 75 Friday

In his final round, Fink recorded 14 pars, birdies on holes No. 5, 6 and 13 and a bogey on hole No. 7.

The previous high finish for a men's golfer under Frenz, who took over the NIACC golf program in 2007, was a 57th place finish from Jacob Urdahl in 2013.

The national title by Fink came a year after shot 74-82 - 156 at the regional tournament and did not qualify for the national tournament.

Fink used his 2013 disappointment at regionals as motivation for his 2014 season.
