Marshalltown Community College is pleased to welcome back Chris Brees as the head volleyball coach. Brees was Head Coach for MCC 2012-15 and will return after coaching at Marshalltown High School for the last five years.

""I'm excited to have the opportunity to get back in the gym at MCC, the Tiger family brought me back to Marshalltown to work in 2012 where I have been at the college ever since," commented Brees. "I have always appreciated the support of the MCC and Iowa Valley Administration and I'm proud that they entrust in my abilities to guide the program once again."

Brees has always had a love for the sport of volleyball and has the experience to back it. He was the setter on the AAU National Runner-up team in 1991 at Peking Palace. He was also a three-year captain and four-year starter for Clarke College men's volleyball 1993-97. "I have an extensive love and passion for the game that started 31 years ago and has molded every part of my life. Volleyball has opened many doors for me, connected me to countless people and has brought me extensive joy."

Brees brings an extensive coaching resume to MCC. He started coaching as Head Volleyball Coach at Southeastern Community College in Beatrice, NE in 1998 where he remained until 2002. He had four consecutive winning volleyball campaigns and 2000 NCCAC Coach of the Year. He then moved on to William Penn University as Head Coach 2002-2003. In 2002 he propelled the Statesmen to their first winning season in 10 seasons winning the MCC Regular Season Title. He was also named Coach of the Year.

He then moved on to Grand View University 2003-2005 and Drake University 2005-2008 where he was an assistant coach for both colleges. After Drake University, Brees became part of the Tiger family in 2012. He was Head Coach for four seasons and has held multiple positions within the organization. He is currently the Director of Student Engagement and Residence Life. This is the sixth year at MCC in this position.

Along with his college and high school coaching career Brees has also coached nine years as Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance Head Coach, five years as Iowa Heart Volleyball Club Head Coach, Iowa Heart Volleyball Club Coaches Director for two years and Iowa Heart Volleyball Club Director of Facilities and Tournaments for two years.

Brees is looking forward to the upcoming season but knows there are challenges ahead. "We have some big shoes to fill for the season. There will not only be challenges on the court, but also challenges adjusting to our new "normal" with COVID-19 and what that looks like with athletics," commented Brees about the upcoming season. "This experience will be new to everyone and we will take the challenges day-by-day and continue to challenge or athletes to become better students, better athletes and the best possible self they can be. I want to continue to give back to the game and to the MCC campus." The Tigers will also face the challenge of having only three players returning from last season.

MCC Athletic Director John Kriebs is looking forward to working with Brees and what he can do for MCC volleyball. "I am very excited about working with Chris in a coaching compacity, I have gotten to know him in my short time here at Marshalltown Community College, and his passion for volleyball and the student shows. He will be a tremendous asset to the program and brings much experience and history to MCC Volleyball. I look forward to Chris, putting his stamp on the program over the next few years. This is a big win for MCC and the volleyball program."
